How to prepare for Brand Live Sketching Session

A couple weeks ago I was invited to do Live Sketching  Sessions for CHANEL Beauty at Saks Fifth Avenue located in Town Center Boca Raton. I created custom cards for their top clients as well as sketched products upon demand. I just want to share how I get ready for a Live Sketching Session Events, each one is different depending on the assignment but I always pack everything in the case of anything.

When the client books you, discuss what their vision for their event. Is there a promotion or specific product they want to focus on? Make sure you have a clear idea of what you are expected to do for the event ahead of time and ask as many questions as possible. (Do not procrastinate and ask the client the night before the event what they need)  Also, ask if they have special letterhead paper they prefer to use? I like to print out the companies logo on 110lb cardstock on my HP Envy Printer at home. For this event for this particular event, I created custom cards using Strathmore Watercolor Cards 4″ x 6″ 140lb. cold press paper. The night before I pack all of my supplies in my biggest Kate Spade Tote. Below is a complete list of supplies that I bring to each Live Sketching Session:

My Live-Sketching Supplies

Copic Marker 72-Piece Sketch Set A

Copic Marker Ciao Markers, Skin, 6-Pack

Black Copic Multiliner Pens

Rembrandt Watercolour Pocket Box – 12 Pan

Glas Container for Water

Cello Bags 5-1/4″ X 7-1/4 &  9″ x 12″

Mechanical Pencil

Kneaded Eraser

At least 40 sheets 110lb Cardstock

Business cards

Napkins

The day of the big event, make sure to come in early to set up at least 20 mins before the event starts to make sure you have a workspace. During the event, make sure to breathe and know you can do anything that’s why you’re there! If you encounter clients that are in a rush, I like to prepare some pieces the night before to show as exaples and that can take with them immediately.  Also, instead of having your customer pose, take a photo with your phone so you can sketch them as they continue enjoying the event. If you encounter a client that wants a custom illustration that is off topic from the event’s guidelines to hand them a business card and explain to them what the brand is offering. (Not Lying, once I asked to draw someone yacht during the event!)

Hope this helps you get started with Live- Sketching Sessions in your city! If you have any questions about Live Sketching send me a DM through instagram @Sandraluciadraws. Special thanks to the Chanel Beauty team at Sak Fifth Avenue at Town Center for having me sketch for their clients!
